My Journey

From Speech Therapist to Lactation Consultant

Hi, I’m Bethany Lovern — a wife, mama to two wonderful boys and a little lady, Lactation Consultant, and Speech Therapist. For six years, I worked in nursing homes and schools, helping others communicate. But everything changed when I became a mother.

After our first son was born, I made the life-changing decision to step away from my career and stay home. I absolutely loved being a stay-at-home mama. Before long, we found out we were expecting again — two boys just 16 months apart. They’ve been best friends from the beginning.

My first breastfeeding journey was fairly smooth, though like many new moms, I questioned everything. I met with a lactation consultant a few times for weighted feeds because I couldn’t tell how much milk my baby was getting — not being able to measure it like a bottle was tough. But what made the biggest difference for me was joining a local breastfeeding support group. Connecting with other mamas in the same season of life was empowering, comforting, and filled me with joy.

Our second little boy couldn’t wait to meet us — he arrived just four hours after contractions started at 4 a.m. He latched immediately, but something didn’t feel right. I was in pain — more than I remembered. At first, I thought I must have forgotten what those early days were like. But in hindsight, there were signs. During our short 30-hour hospital stay, no one ever examined his mouth. Every time the lactation consultant visited, my baby happened to be out of the room. No one checked for tongue or lip-ties.

Once we got home, the pain didn’t go away — it got worse. I knew something wasn’t right. My mom saw my struggle and literally pushed me and my newborn into the car. She drove us to my trusted lactation consultant, who gently confirmed, “I can’t diagnose it, but yes — you need to see a pediatric dentist tomorrow.”

That moment changed everything. It ignited a passion in me — not only as a mother but as a clinician. What started as a personal struggle became a professional calling.

I began studying to become a Lactation Consultant — often in the middle of the night, nursing my son with a laptop beside me. My mission was clear: to help other mamas through the struggles of latching, pain, and confusion, so they can experience the joy and confidence of breastfeeding.

Today, I’ve left the world of nursing homes behind to walk alongside mothers in one of the most vulnerable and beautiful seasons of life. Whether it’s trouble latching, pain during feeds, or navigating tongue and lip-ties, I’m here — as a mama who’s been there, and a professional who can help.

Let’s walk this journey together.

No Matter how much it hurts now, someday you will look back and realize your struggles changed your life for the better.
